A Toast to Change: Healthier Weekend Alternatives for the UK's Social Drinkers

By Leanne Oppong.

With another Friday always around the corner and Brits across the country ready to clock out for the weekend, the nation’s hard-working men and women look towards the weekend for rest and relaxation; many seeking rewards in the form of a drink.

According to the Alcohol Network of Awareness (ANA), in 2023, statistics showed that 71% of adults in the UK are consuming alcohol at least once weekly.

Though this may not seem like much, further research reveals that the average adult in the U.K. consumes 9.7 litres of pure alcohol per year. Guidance recommends a limit of 14 units of alcohol per week, but 9.7 litres averages out to 18 units weekly, indicating a tendency to overindulge.

It's fair to say as a nation we enjoy a drink—perhaps one too many. With this in mind, it's crucial to be conscious of our drinking habits—not just during Dry January but all year round. For those tired of searching for a hangover cure the following day, here are a few healthier alternatives that won’t leave you full of booze (and regrets):

 Nights Out

Explore New Scenes Beyond the Usual Pubs and Clubs:

The Bar

While pubs, bars, and clubs offer a vibrant social scene, they aren't the only options for an enjoyable night out. The UK boasts a myriad of venues where you can have fun without the need to consume alcohol, so for those interested in maintaining the ambience that comes with a boozy night out, these substitutes may suit you best:

- Club Soda Tasting Room and Bar: Situated on Drury Road, this unique bar offers a variety of non-alcoholic beverages at an affordable price. Enjoy the bar's ambience without the pressure to drink alcohol but with all the fun that comes with it. The tasting room now offers mood-enhancing drinks alongside your beverage to "complement your alcohol-free drinking experience."

- Jazz Bar: Immerse yourself in the soothing sounds of live jazz. Many London jazz bars offer an extensive menu of non-alcoholic drinks alongside traditional ones. Popular bars include Ronnie Scotts in Covent Garden, which has been around since the late 50s, the Swing Jazz Bar in South Kensington, Ninety-One Living Room, and the QT Music Lounge in Covent Garden. Renowned for its versatility, London has many more Jazz clubs and live music bars (with varying price points) for you to enjoy, all unique in their own way.

Theatre and Cinema Outings

These outings provide entertainment and relaxation without focusing on drinking. With tickets to the theatre starting as low as £20, shows like "Witness for the Prosecution," "For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy," and "Shifters," dinner and a show may be on the cards—and within budget!

Enjoy a captivating performance or the latest blockbuster.

Classes And New Skills:

Have you ever wanted to learn a new skill? Maybe practice roller skating at Roller Nation in North London, cooking a new cuisine like a Dumpling and wonton masterclass at Hel's Heavenly Kitchen, or playing an instrument? The weekend is the perfect time to start a new hobby.

- Ceramic Painting: Get creative with a ceramic painting kit. It’s a relaxing and rewarding way to spend an evening. Another alternative is to spend the evening in a ceramic painting class. Classes are held at Social Pottery in Kentish Town

Nights In

Rediscover the Joy of a Cozy Night at Home!

Sometimes, the best way to unwind is to stay in and enjoy some downtime. There are plenty of activities to enjoy without alcohol.

- Movie or Game Night: Invite friends over for a movie marathon or a board game night. It’s a great way to enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed setting.

The Bigger Picture

In the same year, DrinkAware conducted a study on the UK’s drinking habits. The data showed that 27% of Brits who drink can be classified as binge drinkers, while 12.5% are teetotal. These statistics highlight a significant portion of the population that either drinks excessively or abstains altogether. Finding a balance is key, and exploring alternative activities can be a step in the right direction.

The UK is renowned for its appreciation of alcohol, with Brits drinking an average of 9.7 litres of alcohol per year. This equates to 108 bottles of wine! However, as awareness of the health implications of excessive drinking grows, more people are looking for ways to cut back.

A Healthier Future

By considering these alternative activities, Brits can still enjoy their weekends without the downsides of excessive drinking. It’s about making small changes that can lead to healthier, more fulfilling lives. So, next time Friday rolls around, why not try something different? Whether it’s a night out at a jazz bar or a cosy night in with a new hobby, the options are endless, and the benefits to your health and well-being are substantial.

Cheers to a healthier you!
